For much of the 1990’s GFC was in debt and Peter was invited by Frank Costa, the President of the club, to serve on a fundraising committee. In 2002, Peter recommended and initiated the establishment of the Geelong Cats Sports Foundation and became one of the founding Trustees. The Foundation set a precedent by obtaining tax deductibility for the Trust via the Australian Sports Foundation (ASF), initiating not only a fundraising appeal, but also championing the concept of supporters leaving legacies to the Geelong Football Club via the Foundation. Philanthropic donations totalled over $1m during Peter’s tenure, and the football club has since built on these efforts (and won three premierships), inspiring other clubs within the AFL to establish similar foundations.
